Egypt: how do I obtain a visa from the embassy?

To enter Egypt, you need a visa, even if you are a French national. Obtaining an Egyptian visa is relatively simple and does not require a large financial investment. How do I obtain an Egyptian visa? Can I apply at the embassy?

Contact the embassy

Most foreign embassies are located in major cities. In France, for example, you will need to go to the Egyptian Consulate in Paris if you wish to apply for a visa for your stay in Egypt. There is also a Consulate based in Marseille, so people living in the south of France can submit their visa applications without travelling all the way to the capital. You can also apply from the Egyptian Tourist Office in Paris. How convenient!

Applying for a visa

At present, French and Belgian nationals can only travel to Egypt with their national identity card (but be aware that the extra 5 years' validity of the card are not taken into account). Swiss nationals must have their passport and a photocopy of their identity card. In this case, the visa is simply a sheet of paper, which is harder to lose. So you need to be careful.

To apply for a visa from France, northerners must go to Paris and southerners to Marseille.

You can fill in your application form and send it by post, or come in person to hand in your application. Be careful, as the address of the Egyptian consulate varies from case to case. Make sure you find out beforehand so as not to waste time or go to the wrong place. The application must include your completed application form, a copy of your passport and two colour passport photographs.

The visa application must be paid directly to the consulate, on the spot and in cash. It is not possible to pay by post or to send a cheque by post. The cost is 25,00 € for a single-entry visa and 60,00 € for multiple-entry visas (+service).

You will receive a reply to your request within a few days of processing. To be on the safe side, you should make your request about two weeks before your departure.

What about e-Visa?

The Egyptian authorities have also set up an official portal allowing you to apply for an electronic visa or e-Visa. This simplifies the process and saves you a trip to the Egyptian consulate. You can call on a specialist agency to help you with the process. The e-Visa is sent to you by e-mail, and all you have to do is print it out and present it on the day of your departure.
